Coventry blue

Coventry blue was a blue cloth made in Coventry by weaving and dyeing with woad. Its color was very lasting, which led to the saying “true blue.” For weddings, guests wore rosemary sprigs tied with blue Coventry ribbons. These ribbons were common until the Puritans banned many festivities during the Interregnum (1649–1660). Afterward, the exact recipe for Coventry blue disappeared because of disruption and declining trade.
