Cost and Management Accountant (India), commonly known as CMA, is a professional certification issued by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). CMAs help businesses manage costs, plan finances, and steer strategic decisions to improve efficiency and growth.

Regulation and curriculum: The CMA program is regulated by ICMAI and has three levels—Foundation, Intermediate, and Final. In 2020, the education reforms added 15 months of practical training before the Final exam.

Career scope: CMAs work across manufacturing, services, and public sector organizations. They focus on cost control, performance evaluation, and strategic planning, using accounting records to build policies and strategies that align with an organization's goals.

About ICMAI: The Institute of Cost Accountants of India was established in 1944 and gained statutory recognition in 1959 under the Cost and Works Accountants Act. It operates through regional councils in Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai, plus many chapters worldwide. ICMAI is the sole statutory body in India dedicated to promoting, regulating, and developing the Cost and Management Accountancy profession.

UGC recognition and further studies: CMA holders are recognized by the UGC as equivalent to postgraduates. This makes them eligible to pursue Ph.D. programs in Indian universities and to appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) for eligibility as an assistant professor or for junior research positions.
