Conakry central prison, also called Maison Centrale de Conakry, is in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, in the Kaloum area. It was built during colonial times and has been run by Guinea’s Ministry of Justice since 1984. The prison is designed to hold about 300 people, but it has often been overcrowded. From 2014 to 2020, estimates put the number of detainees between about 1,100 and 2,000.

After Guinea’s 2021 coup, the National Committee of Reconciliation and Development released 79 political prisoners in September 2021. On November 4, 2023, the prison was raided and former military ruler Moussa Dadis Camara briefly escaped; he was being kept for his role in the violent crackdown on protests in 2009.

The prison has three main buildings: one for convicts, one for defendants, and the main hall. Overcrowding has been noted by Amnesty International in 2021 and by the U.S. State Department in 2023.
