Chingiztau
Chingiztau (Kazakh: Шыңғыстау) is a mountain range in the Abai Region of northeastern Kazakhstan. The nearby city is Ayagoz. It is part of the eastern Kazakh Uplands, also known as Saryarka. The range runs about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from northwest to southeast and is roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) wide. It lies about 30 kilometers south of the Degelen range.
Chingiztau has three main ridges: Kanchingiz in the north (the northern peak reaches about 1,152 meters), Chingiztau proper in the middle (about 1,119 meters), and Akshatau in the south, where Mount Kosoba rises to 1,304 meters—the highest point in the whole range.
The eastern slopes are steep, while the western slopes are gentler. The ridges are deeply dissected by river valleys and ravines. Several rivers originate here, including the Shagan and its right tributary Ashchysu (flowing north) and the Bakanas and other Ayagöz tributaries (flowing south).
Near Mount Aktas on the western slopes by the Shagan river is the Konyr-Auliye cave. The area is covered by mountain-steppe vegetation, with aspen-birch forests and willow thickets in the valleys.
Geology: The range formed during the Alpine orogeny and features Paleozoic rocks such as sandstone, shale, and limestone, including porphyritic rocks.
