CHEF
CHEF was an AM radio station in Granby, Quebec, broadcasting on 1450 kHz. It was founded in 1945 by the publishers of La Voix de l'Est and began service on March 14, 1946, with 250 watts of power. Over the years it changed owners, formats and upgrades. By 1996 it was owned by Les Journaux Trans-Canada (now Gesca Limitée) and operated at 10,000 watts. On January 19, 1996, CHEF stopped broadcasting due to financial problems, and the CRTC revoked the licence on February 28 at the licensee’s request. In 1997, former CHEF staff formed a cooperative and started a new Granby FM station, CFXM-FM, at 104.9 MHz with 200 watts. The 1450 AM frequency was later reassigned to Montreal, where CHOU began broadcasting in 2007.
