Cú Chuimne
Cú Chuimne (died 747) was a monk and scholar from Iona. With Ruben of Dairinis, he helped create the Collectio canonum Hibernensis, the first large, systematic collection of canon law in the western church. He is credited with writing the Virgin Mary hymn Cantemus in omni die, one of the earliest signs of Mary devotion in Ireland, and James F. Kenney called it the finest example of Hiberno-Latin verse. In the Annals of Ulster, his obituary calls him sapiens (learned) and quotes a short Old Irish poem that playfully describes his varied career. Scholar Dáibhí Ó Cróinín notes that we are not told which path he preferred.
