Borchester
Borchester is a fictional town in The Archers, the BBC Radio 4 drama. It is the county town of the fictional county of Borsetshire and sits about six miles northeast of Ambridge in the Am Vale. Borchester is described as a historic market town and wool town, a place with traditional English town features plus modern touches like shops, bars, and a cheese shop.
The town has some well-known places in the story. Underwoods is an upmarket department store, and Jaxx is a bar (formerly a café run by Kenton Archer). Ambridge Organics, run by Helen Archer, makes Borsetshire Blue cheese sold at Underwoods. Borchester Land is a long-running property storyline in the series.
Borchester’s exact location in the real-world landscape of The Archers is debated. Clues in the show link it to nearby places such as Pershore, Evesham, Worcester, and Droitwich Spa, and it is associated with a Bishop of Felpersham, suggesting a Felpersham diocese. The town also features in the series’ ongoing property plots.
Facilities in Borchester include a magistrates court and Borchester General Hospital. The Grundy family lived in Borchester after being evicted from Grange Farm in 2000. Nelson Gabriel, a rogue from Ambridge, was tried there and later ran a wine bar in the town.
Education is provided by Borchester College, formerly Borchester Tech. It is a Further Education college offering A-Level courses and vocational courses such as management, hairdressing, and agriculture. In 2002 it offered evening Italian classes, and several characters in The Archers studied there, with one, Russ Jones, teaching there.
