Bloomsbury
Bloomsbury is a central district in London, in the West End and part of the Camden borough. It’s known as a stylish place to live and a hub for culture, education, and research. The British Museum sits at the heart of Bloomsbury, and the area is close to many University of London colleges, including University College London (UCL), plus other institutes such as the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Senate House, the central admin hub for the university, is also here.
Bloomsbury has a rich intellectual and literary history. The Bloomsbury Group, which included Virginia Woolf and John Maynard Keynes, met in private homes in the area in the early 20th century. Bloomsbury Publishing, famous for the Harry Potter books, comes from this district as well. The area was largely developed in the 18th and 19th centuries by the Duke of Bedford, and it is known for its elegant garden squares like Bedford Square, Russell Square, and Bloomsbury Square.
The whole area is protected as a Bloomsbury Conservation Area, established in 1968 to preserve its historic character. A local advisory committee of architects, planners, and other residents helps guide new development. In recent years some old Georgian and Victorian buildings have been replaced by new projects, which has worried heritage groups. Local campaigns, such as Save Bloomsbury, work to protect the area’s history.
There are many notable sights: the Foundling Museum near Brunswick Square, the Dickens Museum on Doughty Street, and UCL’s Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and Grant Museum of Zoology. The Brunswick Centre is a large building with homes and shops. The area is also associated with education, medicine, and museums.
Bloomsbury has excellent transport links. Three Underground stations serve the area directly—King’s Cross St Pancras and Euston Square—with other nearby stops at Euston, Warren Street, Goodge Street, Tottenham Court Road, Holborn, and Chancery Lane. St Pancras is a major rail hub for international travel. Buses connect Bloomsbury to many parts of London, making it easy to reach from across the city.
