Big Sandy Creek is a 211-mile-long river in Colorado. It is a tributary of the Arkansas River. The creek starts near Peyton in El Paso County and flows through Elbert, Lincoln, Cheyenne, and Kiowa counties before joining the Arkansas River in Prowers County, east of Lamar. Its basin covers about 1,863 square miles. The Sand Creek Massacre occurred along the creek in Kiowa County. In many places the surface water is dry for long stretches, with water still flowing underground beneath the bed. The Arkansas River, which Big Sandy Creek feeds into, eventually leads to the Mississippi River.
