History in brief
- The roots go back to the early 12th century with the diocese of Tres Tabernae in Catanzaro; over time it became a suffragan of Reggio Calabria.
- In 1927, Pope Pius XI raised Catanzaro to archbishopric status and it became directly subject to Rome; from then until 1986, the archbishop of Catanzaro also served as bishop of Squillace (aeque personaliter).
- On 30 September 1986, Pope John Paul II merged Catanzaro and Squillace into one diocese, creating Archidioecesis Catacensis-Squillacensis, with Catanzaro as the seat and Squillace as a co-cathedral.
- In 1989, fifteen parishes were transferred to Locri-Gerace, and five parishes were received from nearby dioceses.
- On 30 January 2001, the archdiocese was raised to a metropolitan archdiocese with the suffragan dioceses of Crotone-Santa Severina and Lamezia Terme.
