Archanara geminipuncta
Archanara geminipuncta, the twin-spotted wainscot, is a moth in the Noctuidae family. It is found in Europe and parts of the Middle East, including Lebanon, Israel, Turkey, Iraq, and the Caucasus. The species was first described by Adrian Hardy Haworth in 1809.
Description
- Forewings: reddish-brown with a broad, lighter band along the inner edge. The reniform stigma (a kidney-shaped mark) often has two white spots, but sometimes only one or none is visible.
- Hindwings: grayish.
- Color variation is common. Some individuals are pale reddish-ochre, others are uniform reddish brown, and some are nearly black. Many named forms reflect these differences (for example pallida, rufa, nigricans, unipuncta, obsoleta).
- Wingspan: about 27–32 mm.
Biology
- The moth flies from June to October, depending on location.
- Larvae (caterpillars) are pinkish-ochre with a paler spiracular line and a dark brown head.
Host plants
- The larvae feed on Phragmites species (reed).
