AI Overviews is a Google Search feature that uses artificial intelligence to create quick summaries of search results. It started as part of Google’s Search Generative Experience, first shown in May 2023, and was renamed AI Overviews in May 2024. It rolled out from the United States to many other countries by October 2024 and, by May 2025, was available in more than 200 countries and 40+ languages.

How it works: AI Overviews uses machine learning to pull information from a range of web pages and generate a concise snapshot of the topic. Users can choose the language complexity, from simplified to detailed. The summaries include prominent links to the original sources, so you can read more directly from authoritative sites. Since October 2024, the links appear inside the overview to make it easy to access source content.

Reception and safety: The feature has been popular for giving quick answers, but it has also drawn criticism for possible inaccuracies or misleading content and for potentially reducing traffic to the original sites. Google has worked on improving content validation and prioritizing source links to balance user convenience with publishers’ needs. There is ongoing concern about hallucinations or oversimplifications, and Google says it will continue refining the system.

Notable incidents and legal matters: In May 2024, Google briefly restricted the tool after it suggested nonsensical or harmful ideas. In January 2026, Google limited AI Overviews on some health-related searches following a Guardian investigation. In February 2025, Chegg sued Alphabet, claiming AI Overviews led students to low-quality, unverified summaries and violated antitrust law. In September 2025, Penske Media Corporation sued Google, saying AI Overviews reproduce content from their sites and hurt traffic to publishers. Google says AI Overviews help drive traffic to a wider range of sites.

Other developments: A December 2024 study found that AI Overviews and Featured Snippets can occupy a large portion of the screen on both desktop and mobile, sometimes hiding the top result. In March 2025, Google tested an “AI Mode” where all content is AI-generated and discussed adding advertisements to that mode, similar to the ads in AI Overviews. As of May 2025, AI Overviews remain widely available and support many languages.
