2XX FM, also known as 1XXR, is a Canberra-based community radio station and one of Australia’s longest-running community broadcasters. It began on 2 July 1976, taking over the Australian National University’s student radio on 1010 kHz AM from the Drill Hall Gallery in Acton. The launch was delayed from February 1976 due to technical problems. It moved to 1008 kHz AM in 1978, and in 1985 added a multitrack recording studio for local bands to make independent recordings and air live performances.

In 2000 the station moved to the Griffin Centre in Civic, switched to FM on 98.3 MHz, and changed its callsign to 1XXR, although it continues to identify as “2XX.” In 2005 it relocated to a purpose-built new Griffin Centre premises in Civic, with three studios (two on-air studios and a third for editing and pre-recording).

2XX FM offers a mix of specialty music, talk, opinion and ethnic programming produced by volunteers and community groups. Its core focus is on Canberra’s local community—current affairs, local music and multicultural programs in multiple languages, plus some programs in English. Some content is also provided through the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia Digital Delivery Network.
