The 2019 IFSC Climbing World Championships, the 16th edition, were held in Hachioji, Japan from August 11 to 21. 253 athletes from 39 countries competed at the Esforta Arena. The event featured lead, speed, bouldering, and a combined competition. A separate paraclimbing event was held July 16–17 in Briançon, France. The combined event also served as the Olympic qualifier for Tokyo 2020.

Olympic qualification was based on the combined event. The top seven climbers of the combined per gender earned Olympic spots, with a maximum of two spots per country. Japan, as host, was guaranteed two spots per gender. Although four Japanese climbers qualified, only two could receive invitations. Ogata and Nonaka were later named to fill the Japanese places after a decision on how the spots should be allocated.

In speed climbing, Aleksandra Mirosław won the women’s final, ahead of Di Niu, while Anouck Jaubert secured third place in the small final. In the men’s speed final, Ludovico Fossali defeated Jan Kriz, with Stanislav Kokorin taking third place in the small final.

Climbers who competed in all three disciplines—bouldering, lead, and speed—could earn a combined ranking. The top 20 men and top 20 women in this ranking automatically qualified for the combined event. The combined scoring used a multiplication of the three finishing ranks (for example, 1st, 2nd, and 6th would score 1 × 2 × 6 = 12); the lower the score, the better.
