2017 Khatauli train derailment
On 19 August 2017, around 5:45 pm, the Kalinga Utkal Express derailed near Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh. The train was travelling from Puri in Odisha to Haridwar in Uttarakhand. Fourteen of its 23 coaches came off the tracks when it went over a section that was under repair without warning.
Twenty-three people were killed and about 156 were injured. The Uttar Pradesh police confirmed the deaths, and officials later said that 174 injured had been admitted to hospitals.
Rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force arrived at the scene and used metal cutters and cranes to reach those trapped in the damaged coaches. Some carriages were stacked on top of each other, and one coach hit a house beside the track.
Railways cancelled three trains and diverted six others after the accident. Helpline numbers were issued for those seeking assistance.
Relief payments were announced: 3.5 lakh rupees to the families of those who died, 50,000 rupees to seriously injured passengers, and 25,000 rupees to those with minor injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind expressed their condolences and support.
