2015 Extremaduran regional election
In 2015, Extremadura held its regional election on Sunday, 24 May to choose all 65 seats in the Assembly of Extremadura. The election used a two-province system (Badajoz and Cáceres) with proportional representation and a 5% threshold in each province. About 651,000 people voted, from 911,433 registered voters, for a turnout of 71.4%.
Main candidates:
- PSOE–SI: Guillermo Fernández Vara (seat in Badajoz)
- PP: José Antonio Monago (seat in Badajoz)
- Podemos: Álvaro Jaén (seat in Cáceres)
- Citizens (C's): Victoria Domínguez (seat in Cáceres)
- Izquierda Unida (IU): Pedro Escobar (seat in Badajoz)
Election results:
- PSOE–SI: 30 seats, 41.5% of the vote
- PP: 28 seats, 37.0%
- Podemos: 6 seats, 8.0%
- Ciudadanos: 1 seat, 4.4%
- Izquierda Unida: 0 seats, 4.2%
No party won an absolute majority (33 seats needed). As a result, Guillermo Fernández Vara of the PSOE became the regional president, replacing José Antonio Monago of the PP. The election took place alongside other regional and local elections across Spain.
