2003 Kaduna State gubernatorial election
The election was held on April 19, 2003. The sitting governor, Ahmed Makarfi of the PDP, won re-election with 1,143,890 votes. His main opponent was Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi of the ANPP, who received 668,446 votes. Makarfi's running mate was Stephen Rijo Shekari. He secured the PDP nomination after defeating Samaila Yakawada and other contenders in the party primary. Kaduna State uses a plurality voting system to elect the governor. Six candidates registered to contest. There were 2,620,999 registered voters, and turnout was about 77.0% (2,018,689 votes cast).
