1993–94 Charlotte Hornets season
The Charlotte Hornets’ sixth NBA season featured a roaster refresh around Alonzo Mourning and Eddie Johnson. In the off-season, the team added Hersey Hawkins from Philadelphia and Eddie Johnson from Seattle, and pulled off several trades to reshape the lineup.
The Hornets started strong, winning six of their first eight games, but injuries slowed them down. Larry Johnson missed time with a back problem, and Mourning dealt with a calf injury, limiting him to 60 games. After trading Mike Gminski for Frank Brickowski and briefly adding Marty Conlon, Charlotte faced two long six-to-eight game losing streaks between January and March, leaving them at 22–25 at the All-Star break.
With Mourning and Johnson back, the Hornets finished the season strong, winning 18 of their final 26 games. They ended with a 41–41 record, placing fifth in the Central Division and ninth in the Eastern Conference, just one game behind the eighth-seeded Miami Heat and missing the playoffs.
Star players and stats: Mourning averaged 21.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game; Eddie Johnson 16.4 points and 8.8 rebounds; Dell Curry came off the bench to average 16.3 points and led the team with 152 three-pointers; Hawkins contributed 14.4 points and 1.6 steals; Muggsy Bogues added 10.8 points, 10.1 assists and 1.7 steals; Kenny Gattison 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds; David Wingate 6.2 points per game. Mourning was selected to the 1994 Eastern Conference All-Star team but did not play due to injury, while Curry competed in the NBA Three-Point Shootout.
Attendance and after the season: The Hornets led the NBA in home attendance for the fifth time in six seasons, drawing 971,609 fans at the Charlotte Coliseum. After the season, Eddie Johnson left for Greece, Brickowski signed with the Sacramento Kings, and Robinson was released.
