The 1980 Major League Baseball season ended with the Philadelphia Phillies winning their first World Series championship, defeating the Kansas City Royals 4–2 in the series. The season ran from April 9 to October 21, 1980, with 26 teams playing 162 games. A strike on April 1–8 canceled the last eight days of spring training but did not affect the regular season.

Umpire uniforms were standardized: American League umpires wore blue blazers with light blue shirts and gray pants, while National League umpires wore blue coats and gray pants; the AL also began wearing numbers on their uniforms.

The All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium saw the National League beat the American League 4–2. The Phillies finished the regular season at 91–71, defeated the Houston Astros in the NLCS, and then defeated the Royals in the World Series. The season’s Most Valuable Players were George Brett (AL) of Kansas City and Mike Schmidt (NL) of Philadelphia; Schmidt was the World Series MVP.

TV coverage included ABC, NBC, and USA; Thursday Night Baseball aired on USA, ABC carried Monday Night Baseball, the All-Star Game, and the League Championship Series, and NBC broadcast the weekend Game of the Week and the World Series.

The top draft pick was Darryl Strawberry, selected by the New York Mets.
