1763 in Great Britain
1763 in Great Britain
In 1763 Britain ended a long war and began changes that would shape its empire.
- End of the war and new lands: The Treaty of Paris in 1763 ended the Seven Years’ War. Britain gained Canada and Florida. France gave up most of its North American land; Spain got Louisiana west of the Mississippi.
- Proclamation to limit settlement: The Royal Proclamation of 1763 drew a line along the Appalachian Mountains, telling settlers not to move west of it to reduce clashes with Native Americans.
- New prime minister and taxes: George Grenville became prime minister in 1763. He planned to raise money to pay for the empire’s debts, which led to upcoming taxes on the American colonies.
- Impact: These decisions changed how Britain governed its growing empire and set the stage for later tensions with the colonies.
