Ten women have served in Papua New Guinea's National Parliament since independence in 1975. By 1 February 2019, PNG was one of only three countries out of 235 with no women in its national parliament. In the 2017 national election, 165 women ran for Parliament (about five percent of the 3,000 candidates). None were elected, including the three female incumbents. In the July 2022 national election, two women were elected to the 118-seat Parliament. In October 2023, Francesca Semoso won a by-election to represent North Bougainville.
