Viva Forever
Viva Forever is a song by the Spice Girls from their 1997 album Spiceworld. It was written by the group with Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard and produced by Rowe and Stannard. It’s a pop ballad with Latin and Spanish influences about a summer romance and memories from a holiday.
The track was released as Spiceworld’s fourth and final single on 10 July 1998. The release was delayed and promotion was weak because Geri Halliwell had left the group the previous month, though the remaining four members continued touring.
Critics generally praised Viva Forever, with many calling it one of their best songs. It was a big hit in the UK, debuting at number one and staying there for two weeks, and it earned platinum status. It also performed well across Europe, Canada, and Australia.
The music video, directed by Steve Box of Aardman, uses stop-motion animation to show the Spice Girls as fairies. It took about five months to complete and has a nostalgic, melancholy feel about growing up. Halliwell appears in the video and artwork despite having left the group.
The song was performed on several TV shows and became a staple of the Spice Girls’ live concerts, sometimes featuring flamenco and other stage twists in later tours.
