Vasile Alexandru
Vasile Alexandru (18 July 1935 – 1987) was a Romanian football midfielder who played for the national team in the 1960 European Nations’ Cup. He was born in Bucharest and started playing football as a youth in 1949 with S.E.T. Bucharest, later joining Dinamo București’s system in 1952.
His senior career began in 1955 with Dinamo 6 București in the lower division, then he spent 1956 with Dinamo Bacău in Divizia A. He returned to Dinamo București in 1957 and stayed until 1962, winning the Cupa României in 1958–59 and the Divizia A title in 1961–62, scoring nine goals in 107 league appearances during that period. In 1963 he moved to Dinamo Pitești, helping them win promotion to the top division. Midway through the 1963–64 season he joined Universitatea Cluj, helping them win the Cupa României in 1964–65 and taking part in European competitions, including the Cup Winners’ Cup run in 1965–66. In 1967 he joined CFR Cluj and helped them reach the top division again. His last top-flight appearance came on 13 September 1969 for CFR Cluj against Politehnica Iași. Across his career in Divizia A, he totaled 209 appearances and 20 goals.
Internationally, Alexandru earned eight caps for Romania between 1958 and 1965. He debuted on 26 October 1958 in a friendly loss to Hungary and played in the 1960 European Nations’ Cup qualifiers, where Romania reached the quarter-finals before losing to Czechoslovakia. His final international appearance was on 23 October 1965 in a defeat to Turkey.
Teammates described him as a very robust player with strong physicality, good technique with both feet and with his head, and as a great morale booster and mobilizer on the field. After retiring from playing, Alexandru worked as a dentist. He passed away in 1987.
