United Nations Security Council Resolution 275, adopted December 22, 1969, responds to Guinea’s complaint about actions by Portugal in Guinea-Bissau. The Council called on Portugal to stop violating Guinea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It deplored the loss of life and damage in Guinean villages caused by actions from Guinea-Bissau, a territory under Portuguese control, and warned that if such acts continued the Council would consider further measures to enforce the resolution. It also demanded the release of the Patrice Lumumba motor barge and all people on board. The vote was nine in favor, with six abstentions (China, Colombia, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States); no votes against. Guinea had written to the Council on December 4, supported by 40 African states, and reported further airstrikes on December 12, which led to the resolution.
