The Squirrel (album)
The Squirrel (subtitled Live in Montmartre, Copenhagen ’67) is a live jazz album by American saxophonist Dexter Gordon. It was recorded on June 29, 1967, at Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was captured by Danmarks Radio. The album was released by Blue Note in 1997 and runs 66 minutes and 18 seconds. The producer was Ib Skovgaard.
The performance features Gordon in strong form with an outstanding rhythm section. There are four long tracks, each between about 12 and 20 minutes, where Gordon improvises freely on tenor sax over the driving accompaniment.
Reception: AllMusic’s Scott Yanow notes that Gordon stretches out on the four numbers with passionate playing, though the recording quality is decent but not flawless; he considers the set strong though not essential. All About Jazz praises Gordon’s live performance from this period, describing him as at the top of his form with fast, furious, athletic tenor on the four extended pieces.
