The Special Rapporteur on Women's Rights in Africa (SRRWA) is a role within the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR). The job is to promote and protect women's rights across African Union countries and to handle issues related to the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa, also known as the Maputo Protocol. The position was created by the ACHPR at its 25th Ordinary Session in Bujumbura, Burundi, from April 26 to May 5, 1999 (resolution ACHPR/res.38 (XXV) 99).
