Shooter (1988 film)
Shooter is a 1988 American made-for-television action drama film based on the book Shooter by David Hume Kennerly, a Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer who covered the Vietnam War and later served as White House photographer for President Gerald Ford. The film was produced as a pilot for NBC but was not picked up as a series and aired on September 11, 1988. It follows a fictional photojournalist, Matt Thompson, in Vietnam, played by Jeffrey Nordling in his screen debut. The cast also includes Noble Willingham, Kario Salem, Cu Ba Nguyen, and Helen Hunt. Directed by Gary Nelson, with David Hume Kennerly as writer and executive producer. Producers include Gary David Goldberg and Barry M. Berg. Music by Paul Chihara. Filming took place in Thailand. Produced by Paramount Television and Ubu Productions for NBC, the 100-minute film won an Emmy for cinematography. The production borrowed cast from Good Morning Vietnam, giving the film a similar free-spirited protagonist who clashes with his superiors.
