Russian State Children's Library
The Russian State Children's Library (RGDB) is the world’s largest library for kids. It is in Moscow, Russia, and opened in December 1969. The library is led by director Mariya Vedenyapina. It welcomes about 45,000 visitors a year and has around 1.2 million online visitors annually. By 2019, the library’s collection included more than 560,000 books and other materials.
In 2019, the RGDB celebrated its 50th anniversary, with congratulations from President Vladimir Putin. The library runs cultural exchange programs to introduce Russians to other cultures, such as Hello, Neighbour! In 2019, the Kalimat Foundation donated many Arabic children’s books as part of this exchange. In 2020, the library hosted an online project called Fabulous Azerbaijan about Azerbaijani culture.
In October 2020, the library organized a Draw Egypt contest where Russian children imagined what Egypt might be like. Vladimir Putin and Laura Bush, then First Lady of the United States, visited the library together in 2002.
