Ramashreya Jha
Ramashreya Jha (11 August 1928 – 1 January 2009), commonly known as Ramrang, was a respected Hindustani classical musician, composer, scholar and teacher. He headed the Department of Music at Allahabad University from 1980 to 1989 and taught there since 1968. He was admired for his deep knowledge, creativity and teaching.
His five-volume work Abhinava Geetanjali is one of the most influential in Hindustani music. It analyzes ragas and includes many traditional and original compositions.
Maestro Jitendra Abhisheki was among the first to recognize Ramrang’s compositions and popularize them.
Ramrang joined Allahabad University in 1968 and was promoted to Head of the Music Department in 1980, retiring in 1989. He did not have formal college degrees, but the university valued his merit.
In 2005, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, India's national academy for music, dance and drama.
Ramrang died on 1 January 2009 in Kolkata after complications following heart surgery. His notable students include Kamla Bose, Shubha Mudgal and Geeta Banerjee.
