Puerto Rico at the 2008 Beijing Olympics
Puerto Rico sent 22 athletes (17 men and 5 women) to compete in eight sports at the Beijing Games from August 8 to 24, 2008. The flag bearer was boxer McWilliams Arroyo. Puerto Rico did not win any medals in Beijing. This was the island’s 16th straight Summer Olympics and its 22nd overall since debut in 1948.
Sports and athletes
- Track and field: Félix Martínez (men’s 400 meters) competed in the heats; Javier Culson (men’s 400 meters hurdles) advanced to the semifinals; Carol Ann Rodríguez (women’s 200 and 400 meters) participated but did not reach later rounds.
- Boxing: Five boxers represented Puerto Rico — McWilliams Arroyo (flyweight) reached the quarterfinals; McJoe Arroyo (bantamweight) and José Pedraza (lightweight) also won rounds but did not medal; Jonathan González (light welterweight) and Carlos Negrón (light heavyweight) competed in early rounds.
- Artistic gymnastics: Luis Rivera was the sole Puerto Rican gymnast, advancing to the finals and finishing 14th overall.
- Judo: Alexis Chiclana, Pablo Figueroa Carillo, and Abderramán Brenes la Roche represented Puerto Rico but did not advance past the early rounds.
- Shooting: Lucas Bennazar Ortíz competed in trap/double trap, finishing 17th.
- Swimming: Douglas Lennox-Silva (men’s 100m and 200m butterfly) and Kristina Lennox-Silva (women’s 400m free and 200m butterfly) participated but did not advance to finals; Vanessa García Vega swam in the women’s 50m freestyle.
- Taekwondo: Asunción Ocasio Rodríguez (women’s welterweight) finished 5th, narrowly missing a medal; Ángel Román Martínez competed but did not medal.
- Weightlifting: Geralee Vega Morales (women’s lightweight) finished 9th with a total of 202 kg.
Team context
- The 22-athlete delegation was smaller than Puerto Rico’s 2004 Athens team by 21 athletes.
- Puerto Rico’s largest Olympic team was 80 athletes at the 1976 Montreal Games.
- Between 1948 and 2008, Puerto Rican athletes had won six Olympic medals prior to Beijing (one silver, five bronze); no medals were earned in 2008.
