Northland Mall

Northland Mall was a shopping center in Columbus, Ohio, located at Morse Road and Karl Road. It opened in 1964 as an open-air mall and was enclosed in 1975. Its original anchors were Lazarus and Sears, with junior anchors F. W. Woolworth Co. and The Union.

The mall grew over the years: a south concourse opened in 1979, and JCPenney opened in 1980 after moving from another mall. The Union became Halle’s in 1980 and closed in 1982. An eight-screen cinema opened outside the mall in 1985, and the main mall got a new façade in 1988. A food court opened in 1995 after Woolworth’s left.

Competition from newer shopping centers hurt Northland in the 1990s. The downtown City Center opened in 1989, the Mall at Tuttle Crossing in 1997, and Easton Town Center in 2000. In fall 2001, all three anchors—Lazarus, Sears, and JCPenney—left for Polaris Fashion Place. Northland Mall closed on October 31, 2002, and was demolished in February 2004.

The site was redeveloped as Northland Village, a mixed-use complex with government offices, shops, and the Franklin County Dog Shelter. Parts of the mall remain: Lazarus became offices for the Ohio Department of Taxation, and the JCPenney space was rebuilt for the Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services and the Northland Performing Arts Center. The Sears site became a Menards, and the dog shelter moved to the former movie theater site. A newer Kroger store opened in 2016 on the old central concourse area. Northland was one of Columbus’s first large malls and remained the only one until Eastland opened in 1967.
