Mu Alpha Phi
Mu Alpha Phi (ΜΑΦ) is a Puerto Rican sorority founded on October 24, 1927 at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. It is regarded as the island’s first Puerto Rican sorority and today has 4 collegiate chapters and 7 alumni chapters, with a presence across Puerto Rico and an alumni chapter in Orlando, Florida. Its headquarters are in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The founding sisters were Carmen Rosa Janer, Laura Muñoz, Emma Colón, Aida González, María Padial, Carmen Belén Cruz, Alicia Rivero, Luz Vilá, María Luisa Márquez, Luz Vilariño, Georgina Pastor, Mercedes Fernández, Ramona Santana, Ligia Noya, María Antonieta Delgado, Laura Cesteros, Blanca Martorell, Dolores Gutiérrez de Arroyo, Encarnación Rodríguez, Celia Machese, Sofía Oronoz, Josefina Gutiérrez, Sara Irizarry, María Inés Dávila, and Ana María Santana. As many sisters were graduating by 1930, they formed an alumnae group then called Capítulo Pasivo, which later became Zona Alpha Alumnae.
In 1946, the Beta chapter was established at the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in Mayagüez. The first Beta sisters were Delia González, Maita Bravo, Andreita Martínez, and Rochie Sabater. The Río Piedras chapter was later known as the Alpha chapter. In 1950, the Gamma chapter was formed at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, with Betty Zapater de McConnie as its first president; the chapter gained official recognition by university authorities in 1955. In the early 1960s, the Delta chapter was founded at the Inter American University in San Germán. In 1962, Leila Padilla de Balaguer and Katherine Morell de Domínguez at Arecibo requested a charter for the Epsilon chapter, which later closed and reopened in 1985.
Around 1950, Mu Alpha Phi created a central governing body, Honorable Consejo Supremo, with Judith Mercader de Sifre as its first president. Two alumnae chapters, Chi Alumni in Cabo Rojo and Gamma Alumnae in Ponce, were established but later closed. Alumni groups expanded into several zones: Zona Ponce (1979) in Ponce, Zona Alpha Alumnae in San Juan, Zona Beta in Mayagüez (1985), Zona Epsilon in Arecibo (1989), Zona Phi Alpha in San Juan (1992), Zona Delta in San Germán (1993), and Zona Orlando (founded in October 2016) with about 70 members living in Florida.
Mu Alpha Phi remains active, continuing its legacy as a pioneering sisterhood with a network of collegiate and alumnae chapters across Puerto Rico and beyond.
