Media in Dundee has a long history, especially in print. The city is famous for “Jute, Jam & Journalism,” and today journalism remains its main media strength. Dundee has print, radio, TV and online media, with a growing presence of social media and digital content.

Print media
The main daily newspaper is The Courier, with the Evening Telegraph published six days a week, both by DC Thomson. The Sunday Post is a popular Sunday paper in the city. Dundee has a strong tradition in magazines and comics, including The People’s Friend and My Weekly, and children’s comics such as The Beano and The Dandy. The Dandy was one of the world’s longest‑running comics until its print edition ended in 2012. The Beano continues as the longest-running children’s magazine outside Japan.

Television
Dundee has played a key role in regional TV. Grampian Television had a long‑standing base in the city for news gathering and advertising sales. Since 2007, STV North has produced a nightly regional news bulletin for Tayside and north east Fife as part of STV News at Six, originally from Harbour Chambers and moving to larger studios at Seabraes in 2008. BBC Scotland has a Dundee presence focused on news gathering for TV and radio. The city also briefly had its own TV station, Channel Six Dundee, in the early 2000s.

Radio
Dundee is home to several radio stations. Radio Tay runs Tay FM and Greatest Hits Radio Tayside & Fife. BBC Scotland also has a base in the city for BBC Radio Scotland. Because of its location in the Central Belt, Dundee also receives many other stations such as Heart Scotland, Capital FM Scotland, Original 106 and Forth 1. Wave FM (formerly Wave 102) was taken over by DC Thomson in 2018, closed in 2020, and was followed by Pure Radio Scotland, which ceased in 2023; its wavelength then became part of Original 106.

Digital and online media
Since the early 2000s, digital media and social content creation have grown in Dundee. Independent online platforms and social media brands now shape much of the local culture, events and news. Dundee Culture, a digital platform launched in 2013, is one example that builds a local online audience. In addition to local creators, Dundee is a hub for digital innovation with gaming, creative agencies and online media reaching audiences around the world.
