UAB Blazers football is the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s team in NCAA Division I FBS, playing in the American Athletic Conference. They have played home games at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama through the 2024 season. By the 2025 season, they had appeared in 373 games with an all-time record of 171 wins, 193 losses, and 2 ties, and six bowl appearances (one more was canceled in 2020 because of COVID-19).

History in brief: UAB began in 1991 as a Division III independent, finishing that era 11-6-2. They moved up to Division I-AA in 1993 and were independent there from 1993 to 1995, going 21-12. In 1996 they moved to Division I-A, losing their first I-A game to Auburn 29-0 and finishing that season 5-6. Although UAB had other sports in Conference USA, football became a member of the league starting in 1999.

Coaches and milestones: The longest-serving head coach was Watson Brown, who led the program for 12 seasons (1995–2006) and went 62-74, guiding UAB to its first bowl game in the 2004 Hawaii Bowl. Bill Clark started strong, posting a 6-6 season in his first year, but in December 2014 the university announced the football program would be eliminated. After public outcry and fundraising, the program was reinstated and began play again in 2017.
