Switched at Birth is an American drama about two girls who discover they were switched at birth. Bay Kennish grows up in a wealthy family in Missouri, while Daphne Vasquez grows up in a working-class, mostly deaf community. Daphne is deaf because of meningitis. The two families learn to blend as they uncover the truth and the girls figure out who they are and what they want from life.

Main characters

- Bay Madeline Kennish-Vasquez: The rebellious, artistic daughter of John and Kathryn and the biological daughter of Regina and Angelo. Bay loves street art, dates several guys, and searches for her real identity. She has relationships with Ty, Emmett, Noah, and Tank, and she eventually pursues a career in art, even spending time in China with Daphne.

- Daphne Paloma Vasquez-Kennish: Regina and Angelo’s daughter who is legally Bay’s sister but biologically John and Kathryn’s daughter. Daphne is deaf from meningitis and loves sports. She forms a close bond with Emmett and has several love interests, including Jace, Liam, and Campbell. Daphne trains to become a doctor and studies at UMKC.

- Regina Lourdes Vasquez: Daphne’s mother who raises her as a single mom, later marries Angelo, and works through alcohol problems. She moves between life with Bay and life with Daphne, ultimately building a stronger mother-daughter bond with Bay. She and Angelo face many challenges, including his death.

- John Kennish: Bay and Toby’s father and Daphne’s biological father. A successful doctor and later a political figure who clashes with Regina at times. He forgives and reconnects with Regina, and he has a heart attack during a family dispute.

- Kathryn Kennish: Bay and Toby’s mother. She helps reveal the switch, supports the family, and works on her own therapy and marriage. She and John repair their relationship after a difficult period.

- Angelo Sorrento: Bay’s biological father and Daphne’s legal father. He leaves when he learns Daphne isn’t his daughter, returns later, marries Regina, and has another daughter with Lana. He dies from a brain aneurysm, and his death deeply affects Bay and the family.

- Melody Bledsoe: Emmett’s mother. She is deaf, strong, and protective. She and Regina build a complicated but growing friendship.

- Travis: A deaf Carlton student who becomes connected with Daphne, Bay, and Emmett. He and Daphne date briefly, and later Bay and Travis explore a relationship. He moves with his friends to China for a time and later returns.

- Adriana Vasquez: Regina’s mother and Bay’s biological grandmother. She has a tense dynamic with Angelo but remains part of the family’s story.

- Simone Sinclair: A classmate of Toby, Bay, and Wilkie; she has a rough personality and a past with Emmett and Toby. Her actions sometimes cause trouble for the group.

- Jace: Daphne’s ex-boyfriend from Britain. He helps expose a corrupt senator and is deported, leaving a lasting impression on Daphne.

- Liam Lupo: Daphne’s former boyfriend; Daphne and Liam have a rocky on-and-off relationship that helps shape both girls’ high school years.
