Leylah Fernandez
Leylah Annie Fernandez is a Canadian professional tennis player who was born on September 6, 2002, in Montreal. She now lives in Boynton Beach, Florida, and turned pro in 2019. Fernandez plays left-handed with a two-handed backhand and has won five WTA singles titles. Her best singles ranking was world No. 13 in August 2022, and her ranking was No. 23 as of January 2026.
Fernandez’s breakout came at the 2021 US Open, where she reached the final at age 19 after upsetting several top players, including Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, and Elina Svitolina. She has since won multiple titles, including Monterrey in 2021, the Washington Open (a high-level event) and the Japan Women’s Open in 2023, among others.
In doubles, she has reached a career-high ranking of No. 17 (October 2023) and has competed in all major events. She helped Canada win its first Billie Jean King Cup title in 2023, contributing four singles wins and one doubles win.
On the junior stage, Fernandez won the French Open junior title in 2019 and was runner-up at the Australian Open girls’ singles the same year. She is the daughter of Jorge, who is from Ecuador, and Irene, who is Filipino Canadian; her younger sister Bianca is also a tennis player. She studied business online at Indiana University East while competing on the tour.
Fernandez has sponsorships with brands like Lululemon and Babolat and has served as a Google Pixel Canada ambassador. She remains one of Canada’s leading players and a rising star in women’s tennis.
