Kevin Costner is an American actor, director, and producer. He began acting in 1981 with Sizzle Beach, U.S.A., and went on to appear in Testament (1983) and Shadows Run Black (1984). He co-starred in Silverado (1985), and also played in Fandango and American Flyers (both 1985). In 1987 he portrayed Eliot Ness in The Untouchables, and in 1988 he was Crash Davis in Bull Durham, a film later honored by AFI as a top sports movie.

Costner starred in Field of Dreams (1989), which earned several Academy Award nominations and was later added to the National Film Registry in 2017 for its cultural significance. It’s also listed by AFI among the greatest fantasy movies. In the 1990s, he led Dances With Wolves (1990), a Western he directed and produced; it won Best Picture and Best Director, and earned him a Best Actor nomination.

Other notable 1990s roles include Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) with Morgan Freeman, The Bodyguard (1992) with Whitney Houston, Wyatt Earp (1994), Tin Cup (1996), The Postman (1997), Message in a Bottle (1999), and For Love of the Game (1999).

In the 2000s, Costner appeared in 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001), Open Range (2003), Rumor Has It (2005), Mr. Brooks (2007), and Swing Vote (2008). He played Jonathan Kent in Man of Steel (2013). In 2014 he acted in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, 3 Days to Kill, and Draft Day. The ensemble cast of Hidden Figures (2016), which he was part of, won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. He played Jessica Chastain’s father in Molly’s Game (2017) and starred as Texan lawman Frank Hamer in The Highwaymen (2019) with Woody Harrelson.

In 2024, Costner directed Horizon: An American Saga. On television, he played Devil Anse Hatfield in Hatfields & McCoys, a three-part Western miniseries, and from 2018 to 2024 he led the Western series Yellowstone as John Dutton.
