Karnal railway station

Karnal railway station (station code: KUN) is in Karnal district, Haryana, India. It sits about 253 metres above sea level and lies on the Delhi–Kalka line (the DUK route). The station has 3 platforms and 4 tracks. Parking is available and the station is accessible. It is operated by Indian Railways and owned by the Ministry of Railways. It is a NSG-3 category, class “A” station.

History and importance
- Opened on 16 October 1892 during the British Raj.
- One of India’s oldest heritage stations and is considered a National Heritage Site.
- It falls under the Delhi railway division of the Northern Railway zone.

Rail network
- Current main line: Delhi–Panipat–Karnal–Ambala–Kalka (DUK route). Nearby on this route are Bazida Jatan, Gharaunda, Kohand, Babarpur, Panipat junction toward Delhi; and Bhaini Khurd, Taraori, Nilokheri, Amin, Kurukshetra junction toward Ambala Cantt, Amritsar, and Chandigarh.
- A second line, Karnal–Yamunanagar, has been approved. If built, Karnal would become a junction via Indri, Ladwa, Radaur, Daamla, and Jagadhari Workshop.

Future projects
- July 2021: Karnal–Yamunanagar line approved. DPR submitted in September 2019.
- March 2022: MP Sanjay Bhatia urged early completion; Railway Minister said the line is not yet viable but under review. Supporters say it will connect unserved areas and upgrade Karnal to a junction.

Trains at Karnal
- As of April 2022, about 105–115 trains pass through Karnal daily, with around 50–60 trains stopping there.
- Major trains include Pooja Superfast Express; Delhi–Pathankot Superfast Express; Netaji Express; Jammu Mail; Ajmer–Chandigarh Garib Rath Express; New Delhi–Chandigarh Shatabdi Express; Unchahar Express; Jhelum Express; Malwa Express; Paschim Superfast Express; Ekta Express; Gita Jayanti Express; Himalayan Queen Express; Una–New Delhi Jan Shatabdi Express; Shan-e-Punjab Express; Sachkhand Express; and Agra Cantonment–Hoshiarpur Express.
