Julius Gallus Aquila
Julius Gallus Aquila was a Roman jurist known from two fragments about tutors in the Digest. In the Littera Florentina, his name appears as "Gallus Aquila," likely due to a scribal error reading Γαλλουον for Ιουλιον (Julius), which has caused confusion with other men named Aquila, such as Publius Aquillius Gallus. His exact date is uncertain, but he probably lived during or before the reign of Septimius Severus (193–211 CE), since the Digest records an opinion on a question that Severus is said to have settled. Many historians place him later, and he may be the same person as Lucius Julius Aquila, author of de Etrusca disciplina, or as the Aquila who, as praefect of Egypt under Severus, was notable for persecuting Christians.
