Hypotelorism
Hypotelorism is when the distance between the eye sockets is smaller than normal. It is also called ocular or orbital hypotelorism. It can happen on its own or along with other conditions. It is often seen in fetal alcohol syndrome, caused by drinking alcohol early in pregnancy. It can be associated with genetic and developmental conditions such as trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), 18p- syndrome, fragile X syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and Holoprosencephaly. Metopic synostosis (early closing of the metopic skull suture) can also cause hypotelorism. If suspected, a medical evaluation can help determine the underlying cause.
