Hilda May Williams
Hilda May Williams (April 1, 1899 – March 1, 1972) was an American nurse who spent most of her career at the University of Connecticut. She was born in Chester, Connecticut, to Augustus and Clara Williams; her father was an English-born steel grinder, and her mother had come from England in 1896. Williams trained at the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1925, and started working at Hartford Hospital the same year. By 1927 she had been promoted to nurse supervisor. In 1931 she began working at the University of Connecticut infirmary in Storrs as the resident nurse for students and employees. The infirmary grew into a full Student Health Service with 44 beds by 1947, and by 1958 she was supervising fifteen nurses. Williams retired in 1969 after nearly 39 years of service. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, and Storrs Congregational Church. She died at Hartford Hospital on March 1, 1972, at age 72, never married and survived by a sister and two brothers. The Hilda May Williams Student Health Services Building at UConn’s Glenbrook Road, built in 1950 and expanded in 1970, is named in her honor.
