Helyar Almshouses
Helyar Almshouses are charity houses in East Coker, Somerset, England. They were built between 1640 and 1660 by William Helyar, the Archdeacon of Barnstaple and of Coker Court. Construction slowed because of the plague in 1645 and the English Civil War, and the buildings were completed in 1660 by his grandson, who was also named William Helyar. In 1868 the charity’s income was £46 a year (about £5,200 in today’s money). The almshouses still operate as a charity and had an income of £9,313 in 2005. The building is Grade II listed and was designated on 19 April 1961.
