Defense Weather Satellite System (DWSS) was a planned U.S. Department of Defense weather satellite program. It would have been built by Northrop Grumman and launched around 2018. In January 2012, the Air Force canceled the project, which was to be replaced by the Weather System Follow-on Microwave (WSF-M). DWSS was intended as the next generation for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Along with the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS), it would have replaced the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS), which was canceled in 2010.
