Curious (fragrance)
Curious is Britney Spears’ first fragrance, made in partnership with Elizabeth Arden. Created by Claude Dir, it debuted in the United States on September 14, 2004, and reached a global release in March 2005. The perfume was a blockbuster, earning more than $100 million in its first year and, by 2011, selling over 700 million bottles.
Designed for teens and young adults, Curious involved Spears in many aspects of its creation—from the juice to the bottle and the marketing. The bottle is blue glass with pink heart charms and an antique blue atomizer, while the box combines pink and azure blue. The fragrance opens with Louisiana magnolia, pear, and lotus; the heart notes are tuberose, jasmine, and pink cyclamen, with a base of vanilla musk, sandalwood, and blond woods.
The marketing campaign, featuring the tagline “Do you dare?” and the “Britney Buzz” online effort, used online ads, text messaging, and events such as “Ultimate Girls Night Out.” A famous ad called “Hotel Rooms” was directed by Dave Meyers. Curious broke first-week sales records in the U.S. and stayed strong through the holidays, even becoming Amazon’s top-selling beauty product in November. Travel retail plans and broader international rollout followed in 2005.
The global launch took place March 18, 2005, in New Orleans, with fans from many countries joining Britney. The fragrance boosted Elizabeth Arden’s performance and led to strong results in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Elizabeth Arden later released two more Curious versions in 2006 and 2008 that kept the same scent family while updating the top notes. Curious helped shape Britney Spears’ image as a fashion-forward icon for young women.
