Cliff Jones (musician)
Cliff Jones (born 1968 in Hampton Court, London) is a British musician, songwriter, producer, journalist and educator. He was the lead singer of the Britpop band Gay Dad from 1996 to 2002.
As a music journalist in the 1990s, Jones wrote for Mojo, The Face and Melody Maker, among others. He started in 1991 writing for International Musician and Guitar magazine and later contributed to Arena Homme Plus and The Face. He interviewed many famous artists and wrote cover pieces on acts like Pink Floyd, Iggy and the Stooges, and Sly and the Family Stone.
After Gay Dad, Jones focused on songwriting and production. He helped bring the band Young Heart Attack to XL Recordings and produced their debut. He also produced the Golden Virgins’ debut album Songs of Praise and The Faceless Werewolves for XL, as well as work for Scanners, Love Bites, (We Are) Performance, and Sia and the Applicators. He has collaborated with Brian Eno, Republica and Mark Owen.
Outside making music, Jones is active in the industry and education. He is a member of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors and has served as a judge for the Ivor Novello Awards. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2018 and writes for The Sunday Times, The Times and the Financial Times. He lectures on composition and management at BIMM in Bristol and at Bath Spa University. Since 2013, he has managed the Radiophonic Workshop and co-manages artists for Crosstown Concerts.
