Battle of Dos Ríos
Battle of Dos Ríos
The Battle of Dos Ríos took place on May 19, 1895, near Dos Ríos in Cuba, during the Cuban War of Independence. About 700 Cuban rebels led by José Martí attacked Spanish royalist forces commanded by Col. Sandoval; Col. Salvador Arizón was wounded in action. The battle ended in a Spanish victory, and Martí was killed during the fighting. Cuban losses included several dead and wounded, while Spanish casualty details are not well documented. The rebels tried to recover Martí’s body, but the Spanish forces were too strong. Martí’s body was buried by the Spanish and later exhumed and given a large funeral in Santiago de Cuba in 1951.
