Babe's Blues
Babe's Blues is a jazz album by The Three Sounds. It features performances recorded in 1961, with one extra track from 1962, and was released in 1986 by Blue Note (BST 84434). The title track was written by Randy Weston. The album runs 42 minutes and 37 seconds and was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. The sessions took place on August 13, 1961, and March 8, 1962, with track 1 from 1962 and tracks 2–10 from 1961. Alfred Lion produced the record. The trio is Gene Harris on piano, Andy Simpkins on bass, and Bill Dowdy on drums. In The Three Sounds’ chronology, Babe's Blues sits after Hey There (1961) and before Out of This World (1962), though it was released many years later.
Reception:
AllMusic gave the album 4.5 stars, noting that the group performs mostly standards with a swinging style that blends funk, soul, and sincere feeling. All About Jazz praised Harris and the rhythm section as being in top form, describing the trio as a hip hotel lounge band with a bluesy edge.
