Army Burn Hall College
Army Burn Hall College (ABHC) is an army-run day and boarding school and college in Abbottabad, Pakistan. It is one of the region’s most prestigious educational institutions.
History: The school began in 1943 as Senior Cambridge School in Srinagar, Kashmir, founded by the Mill Hill Missionaries. After the partition, the Srinagar school closed. In 1948, Father Herman Thijssen and colleagues opened Burn Hall School in Abbottabad, modeling the English school system. In 1977, control passed to the Pakistan Army Education Corps, and the institution was renamed Army Burn Hall College. Today, ABHC runs multiple single-sex campuses for boys and girls and offers education up to master’s level.
Motto and naming: The motto is Quo non ascendam, meaning “To what heights can I not rise?” The name Burn Hall reflects its English roots, with “burn” meaning a stream and “hall” a large house. The college is overseen by the Army Burn Hall Institutions Board of Governors.
Campus and structure: The main boys’ campus covers about 19 hectares. There is also a separate girls’ campus. About 2,900 students study here with around 300 staff.
Houses: Students are placed in one of four houses—Syed Ahmad Shaheed (SAS), Shah Ismail Shaheed (SIS), Sultan Tipu Shaheed (STS), and Sher Khan Shaheed (SKS). Each house has its own logo and colours, with dorms and housemasters. SKS has two blocks (SKS-A and SKS-B). The houses compete in academics and sports and foster teamwork and leadership.
Academics and activities: ABHC offers a broad curriculum in English and Urdu and prepares students for various boards and exams. There are many clubs and sports, including gymnastics, judo, karate, taekwondo, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, horse riding, swimming, table tennis, tennis and squash. The annual prize distribution and exhibitions are important events.
Affiliations and alumni: The school is affiliated with the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education and Cambridge assessments, and it offers programs such as SAT, IELTS, and the Duke of Edinburgh award. Alumni are known as Hallians. ABHC has a strong tradition of connections to military education and has been a traditional feeder to the Pakistan Military Academy.
