Alexander Graeme
Admiral Alexander Graeme (9 December 1741 – 5 August 1818) was a Royal Navy officer who became Commander-in-Chief at The Nore. He was born at Graemeshall in Orkney and joined the navy around 1760. As captain of the sloop HMS Kingfisher in 1776, he fought at Turtle Gut Inlet during the American War of Independence. In 1779 he commanded the HMS Tartar and helped capture the Spanish frigate Santa Margarita off Cape Finisterre. He later led HMS Preston, where he lost his arm in action off Dogger Bank in 1781, and then commanded HMS Glory from 1795. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief, The Nore in 1799 and retired as Admiral of the White. He lived at 87 Princes Street in Edinburgh and died there on 5 August 1818, aged 76; he is buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard.
