Snap parliamentary elections were held in Guinea-Bissau on 4 June 2023. The opposition coalition Inclusive Alliance Platform – Terra Ranka (PAI–Terra Ranka), led by PAIGC, won 54 of the 102 seats, giving them a parliamentary majority. Other results: Madem G15 with 29 seats, PRS with 12, PTG with 6, and APU with 1.

Turnout was 79.57%. The 102 members are elected by two methods: 100 seats from closed-list proportional representation across 27 multi-member constituencies, and 2 seats for expatriates in Africa and Europe.

Background and aftermath: President Umaro Sissoco Embalo had dissolved the previous parliament on 16 May 2022 amid corruption accusations and deadlock between the assembly and other branches. After the 2023 election, further turmoil followed: on 4 December 2023, Embalo dissolved the opposition-controlled parliament, saying an “attempted coup” had prevented him from returning home from COP28. Parliamentary speaker Domingos Simões Pereira called this a “constitutional coup d’état.” Embalo then fired Prime Minister Geraldo Martins—who had been appointed by the PAIGC-led National Assembly—and appointed Rui Duarte de Barros as prime minister by presidential decree.
